چکیده

Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques (NIBS) have been widely used in both clinical and research contexts neuropsychiatry. They are safe well-tolerated, making NIBS an interesting option for application different settings. Transcranial magnetic (TMS) is one of these strategies. It uses electromagnetic pulses focal modulate ion neuronal activity cortical regions. When applied repeatedly (repetitive transcranial stimulation—rTMS), they thought to induce long-lasting neuroplastic effects, proposed be a therapeutic mechanism rTMS, with efficacy safety initially demonstrated treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Since then, many rTMS treatment protocols emerged other difficult treat psychiatric conditions. Moreover, multiple studies, including large multi-center trials several meta-analyses, confirmed its neuropsychiatric disorders, resulting evidence-based guidelines recommendations. Currently, cleared by regulatory agencies the TRD, comorbid anxiety obsessive compulsive disorder, substance use such as smoking cessation. Importantly, current supports potential future syndromes, negative symptoms schizophrenia post-traumatic stress disorder. More precise knowledge formal indications psychiatry critical enhance decision this area.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression and other psychiatric disorders.

INTRODUCTION Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been proposed as a possible alternative to electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of selected patients with depression, bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of rTMS in mood disorders and schizophrenia. METHODS Studies were identified using...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation in disorders of consciousness.

We have reviewed the literature on transcranial magnetic stimulation studies in patients with brain death, coma, vegetative, minimally conscious, and locked-in states. Transcranial magnetic stimulation permits non-invasive study of brain excitability and may extend our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these disorders. However, use of this technique in severe brain damage remains me...

Past, present and future of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of psychiatric disorders

Evidence-based Psychiatric Care 2016;2;77-85 Abstract Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a brain stimulation technique used for the treatment of major depression and other psychiatric disorders. Initially used as a research tool in neurophysiology, TMS has been subsequently extended to the therapeutic area of depressive disorders and approved in many countries for this purpose. TMS uses...

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for clinical applications in neurological and psychiatric disorders: an overview.

Neurological and psychiatric disorders are characterized by several disabling symptoms for which effective, mechanism-based treatments remain elusive. Consequently, more advanced non-invasive therapeutic methods are required. A method that may modulate brain activity and be viable for use in clinical practice is repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). It is a non-invasive procedure...

A meta-analysis of cortical inhibition and excitability using transcranial magnetic stimulation in psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) measures of inhibition and excitation in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). METHODS Paradigms included: short-interval cortical inhibition (SICI), cortical silent period (CSP), resting motor threshold, intracortical facilitation, and motor evoked potential amplitude. A lite...
